In some areas of the country, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) exists in the groundwater used by municipalities for drinking water systems and in private wells. H2S produces an offensive (rotten egg) odor and taste in water. H2S exists naturally in groundwater where shale, sandstone, decaying plant material or sulfur reducing bacteria feed on the naturally occurring sulfates that produce hydrogen sulfide gas as a by-product. Most people can detect by smell and taste concentrations as low as 0.5 milligrams per liter. The 10 States Standard requires that water systems with levels above 0.3 milligrams per liter be treated with some form of Aeration. H2S levels above 1 milligram per liter are very corrosive to water distribution systems and make the water unsuitable for food preparation or drinking.
When this occurs, KCH Engineered Systems can design and manufacture a Forced Draft Aeration or Degasifier system to remove the unwanted H2S from your water system. Other benefits of a KCH Engineered System include the removal of CO2, VOCs and THMs. Selecting our POLYSTRONG® or POLYLAST® materials comes with NSF/ANSI 61-G Drinking Water Components Certification. Unlike traditional fiberglass, these materials also block 100% of UV rays which can cause biological growth in Aerator systems and lead to increased maintenance cost.
