Anodizing

Anodizing is an electrolytic process designed to add an oxide layer on Aluminum or Titanium materials. This process increases wear resistance and corrosion resistance, and provides a better foundation for paints and other coatings.

The most common Anodizing process are:

  • Type 1 Chromic Acid Anodizing (CAA) - Critical Corrosion Protection Applications
  • Type 2 Sulfuric Acid Anodizing (SAA) - Typically Decorative Applications
  • Type 3 Hard Coat Anodizing (HCA) - Functional or Decorative Applications
  • Boric-Sulfuric Anodizing (BSAA) - Replacement for CAA in Non-Critical Applications
  • Phosphoric Anodizing (PAA) - Improved Bonding

Anodizing fully integrates the oxide layer with the underlying base metal so that the finish cannot chip or peel. In a typical process the part is submersed in an acidic electrolyte bath and an electric current is passed through the part (which is acting as the anode) to a cathode mounted on the side of the tank. This oxidizes the surface of the part being anodized to give it the corrosive barrier needed.

Decorative dyes and protective sealants can be added to the process bath to enhance appearance and durability.

KCH designs and builds complete anodizing systems. Our systems are proven to pass OEM and NADCAP quality standards and audits.  Our covered tank systems are designed for significant operational energy savings, when compared to traditional open surface process lines.

Anodizing processes typically contain Deoxidizer and Desmut steps which contain Nitric Acid. These emissions, along with the sulfuric acid emissions must be captured and routed to a Hedron Wet Scrubber. Please contact KCH Services, Inc. for the best options for your particular process.
